Our Vision

Prince Edward County has seen many transformations over the last few hundred years. From an Indigenous port and settlement to a Loyalist settlement. From there to an agricultural and industrial hub, and most recently a popular tourist destination and haven for folks who are fleeing the city seeking a quieter way of life.

While other rural areas have dwindled in population, the County is now experiencing a renaissance. Old houses are now complemented with modernist neighbours. The contrast between ‘then’ and ‘now’ in the County’s residential landscape can sometimes be a fraught topic. Although some prefer the County as it once was, the brilliance of many of the new builds points towards a new and exciting chapter in the County’s history.

In this book, we hope to honour the great stories of the County’s many historical homes, those that have been lovingly restored by newcomers, and those that have been tended to for generations by the same family. We also aim to show how the new and sometimes unusual homes that now scatter the fields and main streets add to an already impressive architectural landscape. And - most importantly - how these two deeply contrasting styles and approaches to ‘home’ can live together in one small County.

We will highlight in photographs the beautiful design elements of each home - the parts that the current homeowners are most excited about, and the parts that give reference to historical elements of the area. We will photograph the homes in a way that celebrates them and the unique ways their owners - both past and present - have made the dwellings special and beautiful. We want to show how the current owners have allowed these homes to shine bright while still honouring their past, and how the new builds add to the important heritage assets of this area.
